Therapists for college students near 27705
Hi! I'm a therapist licensed in Georgia and North Carolina. I help people who are feeling stressed and overwhelmed to better cope with challenges, change patterns of behavior that aren’t working, improve relationships with friends and family, and increase an overall sense of well being. By providing a safe, supportive, nonjudgmental, and welcoming space, I help you explore how social, political, economic, and cultural factors impact your health and wellbeing. My approach is compassionate, culturally-responsive, and identity-affirming, with a social justice perspective. Both my life and work experiences have shaped my work as a therapist. My life experience includes growing up as a child of Taiwanese immigrants, living in Europe as an adult, and advocating for social justice. My work experience includes providing counseling at Duke University Medical Center, Elon University Counseling Center, and multiple therapy agencies. In therapy sessions, I use various evidence-based treatments to help you work towards your personalized goals. You can learn ways to cope with stress, how to not let your emotions overwhelm you, and how to skillfully ask for what you need in your relationships. Sessions are offered online via a secure format. Before beginning therapy with any new client, I offer a free 15-minute consultation to answer any questions and to see if we are a good match to work well together.
Hi there—I know college can feel overwhelming, especially when you're juggling ADHD, anxiety, or using substances to cope. I’m here to help you feel understood, not judged. Together, we’ll create a safe, supportive space where you can explore what’s going on, find relief, and start building the life you want—one step at a time. I offer telehealth therapy to students across North Carolina, including those at UNC Chapel Hill, UNC Asheville, NC State, ECU, App State, and UNC Charlotte. For in-person sessions, I welcome students attending Blue Ridge Community College, Brevard College, Mars Hill University, Warren Wilson College, UNC Asheville and other schools near Hendersonville, Asheville, and Western NC. My goal is to create a warm, affirming space to help you feel understood, empowered, and equipped to thrive—in class and in life.
Are you controlled by the feeling that something bad is going to happen all the time? Life with anxiety can make everything feel on edge, exhausting and overwhelming. But it doesn’t have to. You can learn how to navigate the way you feel with ease and let go of self doubt. Through therapy, we work to build a relationship of trust so you feel comfortable sharing the true struggle and exhaustion you are facing day to day. From there, therapy will help validate your emotions and the experiences that shape who you are. You will receive weekly support into your struggles and a new perspective with insight into these very unique struggles. I will work with you to learn to love yourself by seeing yourself with compassion. We will work to see your flaws as your individualistic capabilities and learn more about why your brain operates on constant overdrive.
Hardworking, ambitious, fucking exhausted. I work with women (18–30) who look like they have it together but are absolutely depleting themselves to stay that way. They’re responsible, creative, used to handling a lot…but they’re tired of overthinking, second-guessing, or feeling like no matter how hard they work, it’s never enough. Some have anxiety, depression, ADHD, or trauma histories. Others just know something feels off, that life feels heavier than it should. Often, they’re great at coping on the outside, which can make it hard to admit they’re struggling at all. But let’s be honest: Appearing “fine” is a full-time job. In therapy, we slow things down on purpose. We look at the patterns you’ve been stuck in — people-pleasing, avoidance, self-criticism — and figure out what’s actually driving them. We work with your nervous system instead of fighting against it. We build practical tools that help you move forward in your life. My style is warm, direct, & honest. I care deeply about my clients and will absolutely challenge you when it matters. I use EMDR, ACT, & DBT skills in ways that are personal and actually useful.

Waking up each day to feel the weight of society’s expectations on your shoulders is overwhelming. There are times where you begin to wonder where you belong and if there is a place you can really be yourself. You were never given the opportunity to discover your true self and now you’re wondering who you really are! So many aspects of how you were raised and the things you experienced are holding onto you and keeping you from embracing new paths in your life. At times, it can be lonely navigating life while finding yourself, unlearning toxic beliefs, and learning to love the person you’re meant to be. But life is a journey! You deserve to wake up excited for the day and all of its possibilities. You are worthy of taking the time to stop and find yourself and discover who you want to be. It’s okay to acknowledge where you came from and the events that shaped you while also striving for a different path. It’s okay to question the ideals you grew up with and it’s okay to challenge the ones you feel don’t fit with who you want to be now! This is your life and you deserve to be in control of it. If any of that describes how you’re currently feeling, I would love to join you on your journey to self discovery. Finding yourself and your place in life can be challenging work but you do not have to do it alone. If you feel you’re ready to begin the journey, I am here to walk with you!

With me, you’ll find a supportive space that recognizes life doesn’t always go as planned. Goals can shift—not as a reflection of your effort or worth, but often because of the realities life brings. Together, we’ll regularly revisit and adjust your goals to ensure they stay aligned with your needs and enhance your quality of life, even as circumstances change. I currently serve the profession as a counselor educator and supervisor while maintaining a small private practice, Rhythms of Hope, LLC. I also serve my community as a licensed clinician, an approved and licensed clinical supervisor, a board certified telemental health provider, and a nationally credentialed counselor. My greatest joy as a counselor is being able to support clients in becoming empowered to navigate shifting tides of their life while accounting for the reality of the unknown. I desire to not only enhance access to mental health support but also destigmatize mental health while enhancing access to wellness. Healing happens when we feel safe enough to show up exactly as we are. All parts of you are welcome here. I’m not here to change you or fix you. I don’t think you are “broken” or that there's anything "wrong" with you. Together we'll create an accepting + compassionate environment, with respect for your intuition + body's wisdom underlying all that we do. I’m trauma + social justice-informed and view therapy through an intersectional lens (mind, body, environment, culture). During our time together, we’ll likely look at environmental factors (interpersonal, economic, oppression) that create individual/collective stress and trauma. I value equity, consent and boundaries in the therapeutic relationship and strive to create a space that is safe, non-judgmental and accepting. My approach is collaborative + holistic, centering around values of empathy, connection and deep listening. I’m Internal Family Systems-informed and incorporate somatic + mindfulness-based approaches into sessions. I provide an Autism-affirming perspective in therapy and believe Autism is a genetically-based neurotype, not a medical disorder. "I understand being autistic to be a cultural identity and recognize autistic people as experts on their own culture." (quote from Trauma Geek). Please visit my website for more information. Warmly, River (they/she)
