Therapists for college students near Portland, OR
My name is Paul Radel and I am a clinical social worker with over 15 years of experience working with individuals to address issues and maximize their potential. I strive to create an environment that is welcoming and safe where people can work collaboratively on their journey. Transitioning into college or post college has a plethora of stressors, options, and uncertainty that can be hard to navigate, especially when maladaptive patterns or past experiences get in the way of being our best selves. I live in Eugene, Oregon but practice soley through telehealth software called intakeQ which offers secure and confidential communication and hosts therapy sessions.
Our world can be a scary place. It is no wonder so many of us are anxious and scared. At the same time, many of us have learned to respond to stressful and uncertain situations in ways that, while understandable, are unhelpful and can manifest as Anxiety, Fear, and Obsessive-Compulsive Disorders. In my therapy practice, I help people learn new ways to respond to their physiology, the challenges in their lives, and the anxiety they feel. As a psychologist, my first and most important goal is to help you feel seen and understood. You are doing the best you can with the brain you have, the tools you have learned, and the challenges you are facing, and the shame, embarrassment, and/or anger that manifests when you feel misunderstood becomes its own problem that can get in the way of change. Next, I want to help you develop more helpful tools to navigate the world, in ways that are grounded in self-knowledge, self-compassion, and self-confidence. I want to help you discover what really matters to you, and learn to take steps toward a life full of meaning, even when anxiety and/or OCD get in the way. We don’t have to wait for our mental health to be perfect to live full and meaningful lives.

I specialize in Bipolar Spectrum Disorders, grief, and trauma and have extensive experience with some eating disorders including anorexia and ARFED. I can help you with any anxiety disorder. My focus is on getting you results. In some cases I’ve been there and I know from both a pets perspective and a professional one. I have a loving therapy dog in my office.
College can be an exciting but overwhelming time—balancing academics, relationships, future goals, and mental health isn’t always easy. At Praxis, I provide integrative psychiatric care that supports college students in navigating these challenges. My approach combines medication management, psychotherapy, and holistic strategies to help you feel more grounded, focused, and in control of your well-being. As both a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) and a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT), I bring a unique blend of expertise to my work. I started my career as a therapist, helping people explore their emotions, relationships, and personal growth. Now, as a psychiatric provider, I integrate medication management with therapy, offering a well-rounded approach that supports both mental and emotional health. Whether you’re struggling with anxiety, ADHD, depression, or the stress of major life transitions, my goal is to provide personalized, evidence-based care that fits your needs. My approach is collaborative, meaning we’ll work together to find the right combination of strategies—whether that’s therapy, medication, lifestyle changes, or a mix of all three. You don’t have to figure it all out alone. At Praxis, you’ll have a space where you can explore what’s going on, feel understood, and develop tools to move forward with confidence.
I help folks ages 18+ in NY, CT, OR, and FL who are struggling with depression, anxiety, relationships, and life transitions. I am a compassionate and nonjudgmental therapist who prioritizes creating a space in which my clients feel “held,” heard, and helped. My approach is personalized, collaborative, and tailored to each person’s unique needs and goals. My practice is strengths-based, trauma-informed, and utilizes a range of techniques including awareness of sensations in the body, narrative interventions, cognitive and dialectical behavioral therapies, and Accelerated Experiential Dynamic Psychotherapy. I believe everyone has the capacity to heal and that meaningful transformations take place in the context of safe and supportive relationships, when we feel seen, understood, and accepted unconditionally. Together, we will process your thoughts, feelings, and experiences to reduce suffering and increase joy, fulfillment, and success. The bottom line: I meet you where you are—with patience, warmth, kindness, and insight. I will assist in identifying and strengthening your own inner resources and wisdom, so we can work more effectively with challenges and pain on the road to a more satisfying life. You don’t have to do this alone.
The demands of life, as well as ever growing expectations, can cause us to feel disconnected from ourselves, our dreams and the people around us. And as we move through life we can experience challenges that may prompt change, but we may not feel prepared for these challenges. This can cause us to feel overwhelmed and uncertain about how to navigate our future, but these challenges can also be opportunities for growth that can be discovered with the help of a therapist.
Fundamentally, I believe we as humans all strive to do the best we can. We all possess the desire to thrive. Our individual internal strengths contribute to our natural resiliency, helping us navigate through life’s challenges. At times, an individual’s journey endures obstacles that are not easily tackled alone. Being human and juggling life’s difficulties can be challenging. Needing guidance to learn new skills and support to foster your strengths is okay. I enjoy supporting and guiding children, teens and families in exploring their needs and identifying strategies to help improve their overall well-being. I will come alongside you, working to grow strength and resiliency, one step at a time.
I believe all people are capable of change and growth. Deciding to come to counseling can be scary, or feel strange at first, but we were created to be in relationship with others. I come alongside my clients to help them identify areas where change is needed and we work together to find solutions in a safe space. Safe, secure relationships are where growth happens.
In my 30 years of personal and professional development, I have created a unique approach to bring hope and strength, healing and transformation. It is my honor and joy to provide and hold a safe space as we work on healing relationship with self, others and the world. Other key components to healing are acceptance, trust, forgiveness and gratitude. Our time together is precious and I will share with you mindful and heartfelt practices to wholeness, authenticity, and presence.
I love working with college students. I worked exclusively with students for 14 years and have been a therapist for 19 years. I really struggled in college myself and enjoy helping students thru this challenging time. Anxiety, motivation, time and stress management are all tough during college as well as how that constant stress effects your relationships and self care and self compassion. Helping out with career and academic direction can be part of our work too. This is also a time that gender identity and sexuality and body image issues can arise. I can help support all sorts of folks (including with neurodiversity and individuals with ADHD and chronic health issues) to stay healthy and regulated during high stress.
The college years can be full of fun and excitement, and they can also come with all kinds of challenges - academic pressure, perfectionism, anxiety, homesickness, identity shifts, and major life changes. You may be coping with experiences or challenges you faced before you got to college, or you may be facing new feelings that you aren't sure how to navigate. Whatever it is you’re going through right now, I’ll meet you with compassion & honesty, and we will work together toward your goals as a team. This is always an LGBTQI+ Safe Space. I began my work in mental health 10 years ago and have since worked with all ages in many settings. I support students who are navigating: - Anxiety and perfectionism - Depression - Trauma and past experiences - Chronic illness and chronic pain - Homesickness and life transitions - Identity and self-worth I also support clients in navigating complex medical and school systems, learning self-advocacy, & processing painful experiences. I help clients realize their inner strength, and feel empowered in their own care and in their lives. My approach to therapy is rooted in trust & rapport, because that’s what makes this work together possible. I am warm, honest, and encourage clients to challenge & dismantle negative beliefs they have about themselves. If you are feeling ready to take next steps, please reach out - I'd love to work with you!
It is important to me that when we meet, you feel like you are connecting with another human being who deeply cares about your emotional world and sincerely wants to understand the challenges you may be facing. Therapy is a space for you to slow down, pause, and reconnect with the strength that already resides within you. I combine my professional knowledge and experience with a genuine desire to create a warm, authentic environment that fosters trust and allows you to explore what matters most. I feel privileged to support you in your healing process, and I am committed to breaking down the traditional hierarchy that can sometimes exist between therapist and client. I have always been fascinated by the human experience—how we interact with others, ourselves, and the world around us. My own personal growth journey and how I have overcome adversity in my life, is a core part of who I am and have become, and it helps me show up for you in a meaningful, empathetic way. I am grateful to witness the growth and resilience of my clients, and I’m particularly passionate about helping those who may be held back by fear or shame. My goal is to support you in confidently stepping into your full potential, believing in yourself, and living authentically. I am also passionate about social justice, including anti-racism, intersectional feminism, LGBTQI rights, body and sex positivity, mindfulness, nature, and radical autonomy. I hold a Master’s in Education in Couples and Family Therapy from the University of Oregon and have been a licensed therapist since 2009. I specialize in a wide range of difficulties someone may be facing including pregnancy and postpartum challenges, relationship issues, women survivors, sexuality and personal identity and more. My role is to support clients to achieve goals, whether it be for self-exploration, empowerment, navigating the challenges of a life transition or wanting to enhance or maintain the quality of a relationship. I am a trauma-informed therapist who highlights strengths and believes that every individual possesses the innate power of making meaningful changes.
Humor is something I like to incorporate into therapy; however, we can be serious about your concerns too. People of all ages struggle with human suffering and sometimes you need someone to walk with you through that, whether it be something you wish to change or something that you cannot. I aim to help my clients make meaning in life while also identifying the connections between our individual concerns and larger systems in life. I provide individual therapy for a variety of concerns, including depression, anxiety, identity exploration, and trauma, with specialized experience supporting people through grief, traumatic loss, and substance use concerns. My clients have expressed appreciation for my ability to sit with them in their suffering, when they have felt most alone. I have multiple years of experience previously working in college counseling centers. During these experiences, I supported students from a variety of backgrounds and found a lot of joy in helping students at a unique intersection in their lives. I have been lucky to work with a diverse student population and have supported many queer and trans students in exploring their gender and sexual identities while also addressing other mental health concerns. In addition, I was able to support BIPOC students as they addressed systemic issues within the university, while also exploring their individual racial identities. I further co-facilitated a family-trauma group during my time at a university counseling center. Thus, I find that I greatly appreciate being able to sit with students who are addressing these concerns. I am a Psychologist Resident in OR. I have my doctorate and five years of experience providing therapy, however, to become licensed in OR I must complete a supervised residency. I am supervised by Dr. Carrie McMullin (OR 2963). I also specialize in working with young adults and completed my doctoral internship at University of Oregon's Counseling Services. I offer individual teletherapy and WPATH assessment/letter of support for gender-affirming surgery. I welcome you to connect with me if you feel we might be a good fit!
