Therapists for college students near 15213
I believe that therapy is a wonderful way to explore inner thoughts and feelings in a safe, supportive, encouraging environment. I enjoy working with college-age students who are struggling with a variety of challenges such as trauma, anxiety, depression, stress, ADHD, post-partum, miscarriage, and relationship difficulties. I believe in the integration of body, mind, and spirit and the importance of bringing balance to one's life for optimal functioning. Our journey together would work toward wellness and healing in a trusting, safe, and secure relationship. I integrate a variety of therapies to best suit my clients' needs, including EMDR, Internal Family Systems, trauma-focused therapies, and traditional talk psychotherapy. I have a certification in EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) therapy, as well as training in Internal Family Systems therapy. I am dedicated to helping my clients heal from past and current traumas through the power of a trusting, secure therapeutic relationship where they can discover and know their inner strengths.

If you’re navigating stress, grief, identity questions, relationship struggles, or just feeling stuck, I’m here to support you without judgment. My style is down-to-earth, collaborative, and focused on what matters most to you. I won’t just nod and take notes, I’ll listen closely, ask thoughtful questions, and work with you to find real tools and clarity. I care deeply about creating a safe space where you can be your full self, whether you're used to therapy or just testing the waters. Outside of therapy, I’m a parent, a dog lover, and someone who genuinely enjoys connecting with people on a human level. You're not alone in what you're going through, and you don’t have to figure it all out by yourself. Let’s talk when you’re ready.

Hello there, Feeling stuck? Feeling stressed out about all the things that are competing for your attention? Wanting to change your relationship with yourself, so you can spread your wings and soar? I'm Stefan (he/him) and I want to be there on your journey. Starting therapy can feel scary, even if you've been in therapy before! To lower that intensity a bit, I want you to give you an idea of how I show up to sessions: - I get to know you - your family, friends, hobbies, shows, loves, fears, passions. - I celebrate and hype you up when you do the hard thing. - I ask questions to get you curious about patterns in your life, and point out when you might not be aware of them. - I offer compassion when your mind creates judgments about yourself. - I welcome and ask for feedback, knowing some things will land and others will not. - I laugh with you and value humor. - I tear up when you feel hurt or uncover a tender spot (while also holding space for you to feel). - I'll tell you I'm proud of you. - I nerd out about mental health, skills, approaches, and explain concepts in a way you'll understand. - I slow down and speed up based on your cues, and I give you choice in how we go about sessions. - I'm always working on our relationship, so there's trust and security when we get to difficult things. - I acknowledge the bigger systems of oppression that affect your life and lives of your loved ones. - I'm active and dynamic in sessions - sometimes asking questions, leading an activity, listening and reflecting, interrupting to highlight something you said, and synthesizing information and summarizing it back to you. All of this "I" is the effort I put into helping you get to "you": what you want, what you care about, your goals, dreams, your emotions, stressors, internal talk, and who you want to become and how you want to show up in life. Specialties: queer and trans identities and lived experiences, anxiety and depression, perfectionism, substance use, navigating family dynamics, healing trauma, couples and relationship work, career discernment Approaches: Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR; trauma approach), Internal Family Systems (IFS), Gottman Method (for relationship work), mindfulness and somatic interventions I'm an associate counselor, seeing clients through telehealth in Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, and California. Finding a comfortable fit between you and your therapist is a very important first step in the process of choosing a qualified licensed psychologist. My approach to therapy involves working in a collaborative, respectful, open, direct, and warm manner. Since our past and present often weave together, exploring the present within the context of the past helps us to understand life patterns which may greatly impact one's relationships, career, and overall physical and mental health. Psychotherapy is not easily described in general statements. There are many different methods I may use to deal with the problems that you hope to address. Behavior therapy is not like a medical doctor visit. Instead, it calls for a very active effort on your part. In order for the therapy to be most successful, you will have to work on things we talk about both during our sessions, in between sessions, and at home. Psychotherapy can have benefits and risks. Since therapy often involves discussing unpleasant aspects of your life, you may experience uncomfortable feelings such as sadness, guilt, anger, frustration, loneliness, and helplessness. On the other hand, psychotherapy has also been shown to have benefits for people who go through it. Therapy often leads to better relationships, solutions to specific problems, and significant reductions in feelings of distress. But there are no guarantees of what you will experience. Our first few sessions will involve an evaluation of your needs. By the end of the evaluation, I will be able to offer you some first impressions regarding our work together, including a treatment plan to follow if you decide to continue with therapy. You should evaluate this information along with your own opinions of whether you feel comfortable working with me. Therapy involves a large commitment of time, money, and energy, so you should be very careful about the therapist you select. If you have questions about my procedures, we should discuss them whenever they arise.
I have always enjoyed connecting with people and learning about their experiences. I knew I wanted to go into the field when I was a senior in high school. From that point on, my education and training have centered on being the best therapist I can be. I have worked in hospitals, schools, and mental health agencies to gain a variety of experiences and expertise. From working in different settings, I knew I had a natural inclination to help my clients feel at ease and make therapy not only helpful but enjoyable.Since I have experienced therapy, I know what it is like to be on the other side. I appreciate a nonjudgmental approach with kindness and humor sprinkled in at the appropriate times. I believe therapy does not have to be serious all the time. Growth comes from support, understanding, and compassion.

When you make the decision to attend therapy, you are making the decision to prioritize your wellbeing in a fundamentally unique way. Therapy is something that can be challenging, but also transformative– Especially for those who have not been listened to, believed, or had the freedom to pause and practice introspection due to the demands of life. Knowing the challenges of finding a therapist who can understand your life experiences, I prioritize working with communities with whom I share personal experience. This includes, but is not limited to: LGBTQIA+, polyamorous/ENM, BDSM/kink, sex worker, SA/DV survivors, neurodivergent, chronically ill & disabled communities. My work is grounded in Relational-Cultural Therapy, which emphasizes the importance of the relationship between therapist and client as an essential part of the therapeutic process. I aim to minimize power dynamics in the room between therapist and client, and firmly believe you are the expert of your life. Rather than an authority in the room, I see my role as a collaborator in helping you achieve your therapy goals. For those who wish to know my social location: I am a Black, queer, disabled, neurodivergent, polyamorous, non-binary therapist in my 30s. I come from a middle-class background in a mixed race household, am a US citizen, and was raised Catholic but am not religious. I approach therapy as a team effort grounded in trauma-informed, anti-racist, fat liberatory, sex & kink positive, and feminist ideals. My therapy practice is eclectic, borrowing from multiple modalities in order to find the best approach for each individual client, couple, or polycule. Common approaches I incorporate include: EFT (emotion focused therapy), IFS (internal family systems), Sex Therapy, and Attachment Theory. I work with clients on a variety of topics, but special interests include: Unpacking attachment wounds using IFS; Transition stages in Poly/ENM; Freedom from shame regarding sex & kink; Impacts of disability; Relationships to health, disordered eating, and/or fatness from a fat liberatory and body neutrality lens. If you are curious about working together, please email lowell@expressyourselftherapynyc.com to set up a free consultation.
