Welcome! I'm so glad you're here. My name is Bethany and I use the pronouns she/her. Counseling is a big step; I want to help you find a way to live more authentically the life you want and help you step into your power. We are all unique and have our own desires and goals. As your counselor, it is not my job to tell you what to do. I am here to help you through the process, provide tools, and build a relationship that supports you as an individual. I think it is most important to meet my clients where they're at and it is likely no one counseling style will fit perfectly. I have experience providing CBT, DBT, TF-CBT, and solution focused therapy. However, while some aspects of these therapy styles may be present, it is more important to provide a safe supportive environment to learn and grow. I firmly believe that counseling should be a judgement free zone and I offer unconditional positive regard as a cornerstone of my counseling style. My background is in working with youth who have experienced trauma. I offer queer and trans affirming therapy and advocacy.
Do tests make you break into a sweat? Stuck in fear of what next steps to take? Unsure of how to make friends? Do you strive to be the person who can do it all, all of the time for everyone-but you're secretly running on fumes? Feeling exhausted or unmotivated? Let's chat. College and young adulthood are hard. Not everyone gets it-and you have some major decisions to make during this time. All while trying to navigate finding and maintaining relationships, working, and getting good grades. And it may feel like you're running out of time and mental energy to figure it all out. This is where counseling comes in. Together, we slow down the process. We create coping skills, find what works for you and give you space to share your thoughts and feelings. We work on building skills you can use now and in the future. This is time and space for you to explore, learn and grow-mostly about you! This is for you.
You may have been holding things together okay, but lately it's been harder. It may be harder to sleep, do the things you want to do, or maybe you don't want to do anything at all. It's been too overwhelming and you don't know how to move forward. Emotions can take control sometimes. Other times we have difficulty engaging with them. I work with clients who want to learn how to navigate their emotions and process events that don't make sense. I help my clients engage with their emotions safely and confidently. I provide a Christian emphasis if desired. You don't have to keep doing this alone. I can help you process your emotions so you experience the freedom you're looking for. We will go at your pace.
“It is never too late to be what you might have been.” – George Eliot I approach therapy as a collaborative journey, one where I join you as a supportive partner in navigating life’s challenges. My fundamental belief is in your inherent resilience and capacity for growth; the therapeutic space I create is designed to be a safe, nonjudgmental environment where you feel seen, heard, and empowered to explore your inner world and find your own answers. In the room, I am a warm, engaged, and authentic presence. I believe that the strength of our therapeutic relationship is paramount, and I strive to build a foundation of trust and mutual respect. My voice is empathetic yet direct, offering gentle guidance and insightful reflections to help you uncover patterns, gain new perspectives, and foster lasting change. I am there to ask the right questions, offer a fresh lens, and sometimes, simply to sit with you in quiet support. My style is best described as an integrative blend, primarily drawing from humanistic and person-centered principles. This means our sessions are always focused squarely on you, guided by your goals and pace. I also weave in techniques from cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) to help challenge unhelpful thought patterns and build practical coping skills and incorporate aspects of mindfulness to help you stay grounded and present. I earned my Master of Social Work degree from Spring Arbor University, where I developed a strong foundation in clinical practice, mental health advocacy, and trauma-informed care. My professional experience includes working in community mental health, where I support individuals experiencing mental health crises in a highly structured and intensive care setting also providing case management, ensuring that the clients I provided service to have the best care possible. I also spent 12 years working in foster care, offering support to clients from diverse backgrounds as they worked through issues such as past trauma, anxiety, and depression. I am the mother of three children and the grandmother to two beautiful girls. I enjoy spending time with my family sharing food and laughter. I believe that we should not put time limits on our own personal journeys as I completed many life accomplishments later in life. My own personal experience has shown me that therapy can be life changing.
If you are looking for someone to talk to, who will listen, without judgment, and help you work toward your goals and become your true self, you've come to the right place. I have experience working with people dealing with a variety of issues. I will take the time to understand you, challenge you, and work together toward positive growth and change. I work closely with several other therapists in a group practice, "Sheri Rodriguez & Associates Therapy". Life is full of challenges, which I view as opportunities for growth and learning. I've worked with college students on MSU's campus for nearly 10 years which has given me a depth of understanding to the unique challenges you face. I join alongside clients who are facing a wide range of issues including: navigating life transitions, interpersonal relationship conflicts, academic or professional challenges, adjusting to changes at home or in the family structure, exposure to abuse or neglect, establishing boundaries in relationships, healing from past trauma, and navigating grief and loss. We are all on our own journeys and I welcome the opportunity to join you on yours. Our work together will be interactive and reflective, with a healthy mix of challenge and humor. We will collaborate to find the approach that best meets your needs, and your feedback and input is an essential part of the process. I incorporate a trauma-informed lens to my work and seek to understand how past experiences have shaped our current disposition and automatic responses. I am committed to providing treatment that is anti-racist, culturally responsive and affirming. My practice is client-centered and strengths-based. I utilize a warm, accepting and compassionate approach. I believe in the power of the professional relationship between client/therapist and I want to work alongside you to improve your current situation and reach your desired goals.
Kelsey Dowty, is a licensed master social worker with over 10 years of experience working with young children and their families. Kelsey is an endorsed Infant Mental Health Specialist and certified in Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT). She is often inspired by her pet pigeon Bobber and his flock of resilient pigeon friends, who have a remarkable way of igniting hope in the hopeless. Bobber and his feathered friends sometimes make their way into therapy, as they enjoy sharing their life stories with children about how embracing adversity can create beautiful meaning. Kelsey has worked extensively with young children experiencing developmental delays, children dealing with trauma and loss, children who have attachment disorders, as well as children who have been in foster care or adopted. For young children, she approaches trauma and attachment difficulties within the parent-child relationship, as caregivers are essential in helping their child heal. Kelsey knows there is power in relationships and opportunity for healing. She is here to witness your truth, sit with you through the anguish, and empower you to create your next beginning.

Taking the first step toward therapy can feel overwhelming, especially when you are already juggling classes, relationships, and figuring out your next steps. But you don’t have to navigate it all alone. I believe therapy is a collaborative partnership where you are the expert on your own life. My goal is to provide a safe, non-judgmental, and deeply supportive space where you can unpack whatever is weighing you down. I often remind my clients that healing isn’t about erasing the past or pretending everything is perfect; it’s about learning how to live fully right now, even while you are working through old wounds. We all have chapters of our lives shaped by the pain of betrayal, loss, or stress—but those chapters do not get to dictate the rest of your story.
